Mermaids are Real!

Florida trip, Part 7

So, when I’m thinking about Florida and I’m not thinking of Coral Castle or Miami Vice, I’m thinking about the Weeki Wachee Mermaids! I mean, obviously!

I wasn’t interested in too much of West Coast Florida, but I had to see the mermaids. This has been a Florida attraction since 1947, and I was so surprised to learn they still exist! I’ve been reading/thinking about them since the early 1990s. I’m a pessimist when it comes to visiting old tourist attractions, so I had pretty low expectations. I drove up from Kissimmee, pedal to the metal, and barely made the final show of the day. I was like 10 minutes late or something.

Oh man, the show was SO GREAT! Archival film footage, live pre-recorded comedy, straight up unparalleled mermaid behavior…. The scene is pretty much what it was in 1947 when the show opened, but it stands the test of time.

DO NOT MISS THE WEEKEEWACHEE MERMAIDS!!!!
